I found one thread that said my username should be added to the sane group. I
tried that and it didn't work.

I also have this problem with 64 bit Karmic and a Canon N670U.
Installing libsane_1.0.19-23ubuntu7_amd64.deb and libsane-
extras_1.0.19.11ubuntu2_amd64.deb as suggested above doesn't help.
Running xsane from a terminal gives me:

I am also using an HP 3570c scanner attached via usb, xsane also crashes
without issuing a message after the completion of the scan or acquire
preview, before any image is displayed.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala which is kept fully updated.

I am experiencing the same problem with an HP OfficeJet 6500. I tried
to downgrading to jaunty's libsane - didn't have any effect. I then
tried downgrading to jaunty's libsane, sane-utils, xsane, and xsane-
commons - still no effect. When running from the command line, I see
this error message:
Reverting to Jaunty's libsane sane-utils and libsane-extras did not work
for me.
When I reverted I get xsane

I just tried this with a whole range of scanners on Karmic x64 - I can
confirm that the bug does not depend at all on what kind of scanner you
use. Is there any chance that the Ubuntu developers will fix this? At
work we need to scan. This bug is definitely a blocker.

Confirmed. This is a problem with sane itself, as it is frontend-independent.
I tried scanning from a HP 3500 with scanimage -vvv: Tests (--test) ran fine,
mostly, but when trying to scan it hang up, the last line displayed being
Closing device.

Just to confirm this bug with my scanjet 3500c and in two different

Thanks. That worked, more or less. At first it didn't work, but after
installing sane-utils and libsane-extras via the deb-packages it seems
to work. Only remaining problem is that I cannot quit xsane and so I
have to kill the task to get rid of it. But that's a minor problem.

could also solve it by following S. Christian Collins' method.

@Henrik or Christian: How would I do that? Synaptics doesn't offer this
version (what seems logical to me, as it only has the latest versions
that are included in Karmic). Could someone please lead me the way?

You
@Reini68: Uninstall the libsane package in Synaptic, then download the
Jaunty .deb file from here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libsane
and install it. You will have to install xsane again, as it is removed
when you uninstall libsane in Synaptic.

I also have this exact same bug with an HP ScanJet 3500c. I was able to
solve it by installing Jaunty's version of libsane (1.0.19-23ubuntu7).
Could this be a problem with the HP3500 backend in the 1.0.20 version of
libsane?

I have the same problem with identical symptoms. I started a thread in
Desktop Environments yesterday titled xsane quits, but I have had no
responses to date. I had no problems with this in Jaunty, and I have
upgraded to Karmic.

BTW, I just tried xscanimage and got the same result. I do not know if
this rules out xsane and makes it a sane issue or not. I am just
learning my way around Ubuntu, so it may not matter. But xsane is a
frontend to sane, which is what xscanimage is. Dores xsane use
xscanimage?

This happens on Ubuntu Karmic final release as well, I checked with two
completely different computers (one a 4 yr old notebook, and one a up-
to-date desktop machine), both running Karmic.
The machine running Jaunty is NOT affected by this bug, scanning works
great there.
Maybe a bit more into
Sorry, I forgot to mention: This happens with Flegita as well. Again it
works in Jaunty and not in Karmic.
