Oddly, on a lucid server with the recent update, I just tried manually
restarting squid with hammering upstart commands and got unexpected
I noticed that I managed to induce this behaviour by rm'ing the squid
log files. Performing the commands in the proposed resolution to bug
717397, i found that the upstart pid for squid != pid squid is running
as. Therefore it seems to be the same issue. The -proposed package,

I have now looked at the log format/output.

Daniel, the reason I didn't submit it there was idd because I had to

It doesn't seem that this package handles the state where squid is in
the stop/waiting state prior to upgrade. The previous restart style
stanzas are encapsulated in checking current status if statements.

vsftpd: discloses whether usernames are valid or not

The bug only occurs when the user whitelisting facility is being used (ie
userlist_enable=YES)
http://securitytracker.com/id?1008628
A workaround is to disable the uselist facility and then use PAM to deny
services.
I think this is a kludge. It should be possible to deny by default,
unless
Is your userlist_deny=NO/YES set. Could this be missing or commented
out in your configuration? Also, is your local_enable= variable set?
The security advisory only addresses disclosure of valid users and does
not allow password-less logins. I am sure a patched security update
will be provided
This does not allow for non password user authentication. The security,
or rather bug in question allows for brute force user name disclosure
and therefor a new bug report should be made and this ticket closed as
this description states falsely that causes the system to skip asking
for a password
I also want to take notice to the issue date of the vulnerability:
Updated: Jul 6 2008
Original Entry Date: Jan 7 2004
I changed the ticket status to 'invalid' and it should be closed.

Marking this bug as Triaged. This is a problem in the upstart script
that only exists in the Ubuntu package, and so there's no other upstream
for it. This was one of the first services ported to upstart and so
we're learning a lot through fixing the bugs in its upstart job and
surrounding
Also raising the importance to Medium, and tagging regression-release.
I'm sure hardy users, on upgrade to lucid, will be surprised to see that
their single user mode changes aren't properly handled.

This was brought up in bug #717397 by Steve Langasek.
The restart, start, stop, reload, etc. commands must not be directly
called in maintainer scripts. invoke-rc.d should be used to properly
maintain policy and deal with some oddness between
