Here is a new version of the patch.
The patch now properly handles PhpBB3 variant
of Phpass (See comments on stackoverflow for details).
The patch has been tested on Ubuntu 12.04.1.

Patch is a bit late for 12.10 as its really a features; I'd also like to
see it accepted upstream first (note that you have already submitted
