I found another way to freeze the system. For me, the following command
will usually trigger a freeze before it completes:
x11perf -range copywinpix10,comppixwin500 -time 1 -repeat 1
I'd like to find out if that freeze is connected to this one. If it is,
then we have a good, reproducible test
Unfortunately I cannot run apport-collect on 9.10 as I currently run
9.04 (which uses the entire harddrive). Let me know if you want some
more information about the hardware.

I can confirm that there are artefacts after resume. The ones I'm seeing
are different though (attached screenshot). The rest if the same -
random characters in console, having to ctrl+alt+f7 to get to the X
session. It may be related to hal-udev migration?

only run dual monitors w/ Compiz turned on if I set the LCD to 1024x768

Looks like my previous report was largely premature. After looking
deeper into issue I've found that my initial ati driver install and
configuration somehow get screwed up along with some other components
like libgl1-mesa-glx and libgl1-mesa-dri.
