without the invalid framebuffer id line in dmesg, and when I switched to
a VT and back the VT text stayed visible (i.e. the screen was not
cleared), but the X server mouse pointer was shown on top.

Yes, this must be a driver issue, because I checked it today with a
laptop which has an Intel GMA X4500 and there was no stuttering. In fact
this makes the open source driver useless, because under Unity 2D theres
no stuttering, but I got video tearing instead on both machines (bug

I did have this bug for a couple days, had also removed some obsolete package
and purge the system. Before the update when I start typing in the search
engine, gnome-panel top and left disappear completely and left nautilus freeze,
from terminal I did gnome-panel --replace which works while in
sorry do not know how! does not speak English. Only thing I can say is
that is is a bug with the nvidia catre optimus, which manages the
graphics and battery, same problem but under 11.10 with a set script.

For the record, 11.10 didn't work either. I've managed to install
Ubuntu, and then boot it in recovery mode - then install the proptietary
drivers and it worked almost fine. Didn't see any loading screen until
the login screen came up, however.

Alberto uploaded a new fglrx 8.960 to precise today. We don't have a
changelog from ATI on this so don't know exactly what bugs got fixed.
Would you mind updating to this driver and re-testing for this bug, to
see if it's fixed now?

Sorry, i changed system and have now 12.04 i386 version. I thought that my
pc was too old (HP DV7 Dual core T6600 4 Gb Ram ATI Radeon 4500
And Pilote run well and no problem with colors and card graph function.

I changed the 12 04 version 64b in 32b because i think that my computer is
too slow with 64b. And it seems to be a pilote ATI Radeon problem with this
version.

2. Does it behave this way every login in, or just the once, or

Probably the well-known Xv crash with the old -fglrx. Upgrade to 8.960
and it should stop crashing. If not, reopen.

I see compiz crashed:
