No, booting into an older Kernel (3.5.0-16-generic) didn't solve the problem.
Worth noting is that it seems if I disable the following line in
/etc/defaults/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
the system has also no boot problems.
But the shutdown process doesn't look as pretty as
