Thanks for answers, all back to normal this morning after the usually
updates and reboot (exception of the debian grub in place of ubuntu but
different matter ;).
Then after reboot the resolution was ok for authentication, and after
login in ubuntu standard session changing resolution settings

Hmm, the Xorg.0.log indicates no EDID is being received from the
monitor. Presumably it was auto-detecting previously because it was
getting the EDID.
I've never heard of wine game modechanges causing corruption to the EDID
itself (it's usually firmware, although some monitors have writable
