Agreed. I have an Apple magic trackpad that I occasionally play with,
and this issue / design choice makes it pretty unusable with current
Unity. The multitouch gestures for moving windows are great and all,
but what's the substitute for highlight text with click and drag, and
then middle click
Correct me if I wrong but this call is happening from the Qt libraries, not
from the VLC itself.
That is why it is a bug. The only safe place to call putenv() is early in the
VLC main() function, before any thread is created. In practice, the VLC code
base has long since been audited and all

11.9 did not helps for me. Less garbage in gnome-shell session, but followed by
gnome-shell crash.

I have the exact same problem here. I also installed Ubuntu 11.10 (i
used the Beta 1 LiveCD but my packages are all up to date at the
moment)

When clicking some apps like vlc, xorg claims all ram and swap. The desktop
turns to a still image, video stops, sounds stops, the harddisk led lights
continuesly. This is the same effect as in 826504, but not in the intel driver.
