It looks like what happened is that you ran upgrade-from-grub-legacy,
but didn't choose to install GRUB 2 to the same place as GRUB Legacy; so
you now have a little stub of GRUB Legacy installed somewhere or other,
which you're booting

messages in dmesg led me here (via Google Search). I initially thought
the drive was faulty but it is not the case.

while having the memory number in quotes it failed to create the
