The VLC binary packages in Ubuntu claim to be licensed under GPL version 2.
From /usr/share/doc/*vlc*/copyright:
On Debian GNU/Linux systems, the complete text of the GNU General

This is actually worse. The same vlc-nox package links against a version

Hence, I believe the package is not legally redistributable as is in
most jurisdiction.

computer, but the boot loader is usually excepted... Also, my /boot
happens to be a separate partition :)

I had the same problems as b355_etude. I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10.
After install I ran the update tool and was offered a choice to change
the grub configuration to the developer's version or keep the current.
I chose to view the differences. From the differences window I hit

I still didn't understood the error, but it seems usual when upgrading to
Ubuntu 9.10 through alternative CD auto-update.
I think I didn't had ttf-mscorefonts installed yet.
But I'm glad to see that this system is working fine. Community rulz.
