Hey,
had the same problem in Ubuntu 9.10 64bit .
Uninstalling pulseaudio and the mic is ok in my windows xp guest.
I had to do a
apt-get purge pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio + the rest of my packages
related to pulse (found via dpkg -l | grep pulse),
except i still got libpulse-browse0

intrepid update. Fixing hardy is okay, with being an LTS and all that.

This is a trivial package (both code and packaging-wise). No bugs, no
changes in a long time.
It would be nice if the server team subscribed to Ubuntu bugmail.
I noticed that the existing target to run the tests was outdated and was
not even being run. I applied the following diff to run the
