Oh. I misread your original description to mean that only sun-java had
this problem. I think I understand what you're saying now. You mean that
if you just install sun-java and/or openjdk, then there is no default-
java symlink. This symlink only gets created if you install the default-
jdk

No problem, this whole distinction between invalid and fixed released is
all just semantics anyway. I thought it was more appropriate as invalid

I understand your desire to run the latest version of Eclipse, but
Ubuntu can only fix bugs in packages that are part of Ubuntu. That being
said, can you see if this bug exists in Karmic. The version of eclipse
included in the karmic repo is 3.5.1 last I checked, so it is totally up

I'm more inclined to think this is an Eclipse issue with their gui code,
as it looks like the gtk widgets are being drawn correctly and there are
no X errors. It's just probably eclipse has implemented some callbacks
incorrectly or something. Unfortunately, Eclipse 3.5 is not supported in
Karmic.
It's probably not a good idea to update gnash so close to final release
for Karmic. Still, it looks like 0.8.6 has some bug fixes, so it may be
a good idea to target it for Karmic updates.
