I have tested the newer version. This bug has been fixed in vlc 1.0.3-1,
available from the following PPA (use the long form address):

I'm having the same problem...
Add a few directorys to the playlist, the names are all jumbled, when
trying to sort by title the player crashs with the above errors
stated, has only happened with the recent jaunty 64bit update...
using VLC 1.0.2 goldeneye.. its also effected auto-subtitle's
