Archiving Thunderbird email on CD/DVD using Fedora / RHEL

Has anyone ever successfully archived all or a portion on their email onto a CD or DVD in such a manner that they can mount the media later and successfully read from it using Thunderbird? TBird seems to want write capability on the media. Any tricks for getting around this?? --
