Actually the best way to do this (for future reference, because if you do this now you'll lose all the data on the ipod) is to format the iPod as a PC and Mac compatible external drive, and load whatever you want to back up to it via the finder just like you would any other external drive.

Is your iPod set up in iTunes preferences to sync to iTunes on that suspect computer? If it is, at least on my box, there's a setting whereby you allow a synch to erase anything on the iPod that isn't "checked" in iTunes or that you've deleted from iTunes. Be careful out there, Richard.

does your mini dv cam have an analogue video input? if it's a sony sometimes you need to turn off the 'DV to analogue out' before it will accept an analogue input. just feed the video into it as if you're capturing a live feed. if you're using Final Cut Pro you'll need to set your device

Actually if your MiniDV has digital pass through you shouldn't even need to record it onto tape. You should be able to go from the VCR RCA jacks into the MiniDV cam and out to firewire into your computer to capture. Check the manual for your camera and see what the settings and set up are for

If you are talking about mobile phones then I think that typically you need a video that is encoded as 3GP. I don't know what the exact specs are but I have used Apple compressor to create 3GP files. There weren't many options so I assume that the compression settings are pretty strict. There
