But is far better a fresh install if you can find a full install .iso. Be
aware that recovery disk are machine dedicated

10.5 really was better than 10.4 due to underlying changes to threading in
the kernel. Things ran WAY faster... for awhile... until Apple's inane
"GC" requirements kicked in and they lost all the performance gains they'd
claimed. Boo on them... that was when Windows+Linux pulled ahead,

Negative, there were both Intel and PPC versions of 10.4. 10.5 was the
last for PPC.

You will need to burn the ISO to a DVD-RW. You cannot boot a PowerPC Mac

If the .iso is ok, no problem, I did the same from a Linux machine.
The .iso file for OSX 10.4 is pretty easily found on the net.

So I've found a few ISOs that might work, my only problem is finding a way
to get the mac from booting from them. I have already exhausted my USB
options, and so I ordered a few CD+RW on amazon. My question is: if i burn
the ISO/DMG through my Windows PC, will my ibook read it?
On Wednesday,
I think if you boot in recover mode (command, option, r) if you are connected
to the internet you will be directed to an Apple site that will supply you with
the highest level OS for your Mac

Thanks for the help everyone! I was able to acquire a iBook G4 for
relatively cheap ($37). My only issue is with OSX, and I hope you guys can
help me. It currently runs 10.3 (Panther) but I would like to upgrade it to
Tiger. I was hoping for a way to upgrade it without buying a DVD. Do you
Yes. Release the control rods! #AppleCube
Kuh-chunk. What other computer makes such a satisfying "kuh-chunk" sound
when you disassemble it?

The cube is a fun design... If you ever have to open it up to replace
RAM, hard drive, etc., it's like you're in a Sci-Fi movie removing the
computer core.

I’d concur on the cube. It’s my favorite as well. I still have one with a
custom carrying case in storage with the matching monitor.

I'd get a Mac Cube. I got mine in a 'cube fire sale' a season before Intel
machines shipped- never has had a problem... tho' some did.
Seems that Apple tried to put some quality into the design, unlike the more
budget machines.
I recently got a G3 blue+white too- just like the one I had at
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll certainly be looking around for some more
time, but I think the places you suggested can help reduce the time I'm
looking. I will certainly look at the Mac mini a bit more closely though.
Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply! I had definitely looked at the Mac minis before, and
after looking at all of my options, I've decided to switch my focus over to
those. It would certainly be great to have a PowerBook, but I believe that the
Mac mini would be a more convenient machine to tinker with.

Chris,
I might be able to help, though I’ll have to cobble together something from a
stack of PPCs in my archive and it might take a month or so.

I think LEM Swap is a good place where only apple stuff is sold, and I
myself ended up striking a deal in this group to get a Power Macintosh 5200
with a 5500 board, but in terms of eBay alternatives, I like Mercari
because you can get a crazy deal on some of these older Macs, especially G3
Have you already looked at the LEMSwap list? If there's nothing in the
recent posts put out a WTB and see who comes up with something. If you
don't need portability, you should also consider the G4 Mac Minis - they're
super compact and won't have the battery issues or price premium of the
Hello,
I just recently had to let go of a G5 Mac and would love to get back into
PowerPCs. I've been looking around eBay, but there are very few machines
that really caught my eye. I'm mostly interested in a G4 PowerBook, as I do
not have any extra space for a full tower. I'm also hoping to
