Hi there, Yes you can join group chats for both those services without needing a web browser. You'll need third party plugins to connect to Facebook and to join group chats on Hangouts. Links to those plugins can be found in the wiki at https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins
