It's possible. Someone suggested something similar way back when but never
followed up with more detailed instructions on how to fix it if that was
indeed the case.

Sounds to me like you had JK2 configuration files but were using the JK 
connector, and as soon as you subbed in the connector that matched the 
files it worked.
