I finally got it working. I cannot really tell how I did it. It was a
combination of deactivating, uninstalling and re-installing the enigmail
add-on which made it finally work. However, I think that it could be
possible to reproduce the problem by copying a thunderbird home
directory from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04.
