mail-notification sometimes displays these dialogs, but I can't discern any pattern (it sometimes uses the bubbles). also, the mail notification icon frequently disappears from my system tray, but it's still running (verifiable through ps aux and by the fact that it still notifies (by sound and bubbles/dialogs) on new mail).
