I have recently attempted to open a different .docx file in which Openoffice 3.1 was able to open without any problems. Perhaps you are correct in that some other code within the file is causing Openoffice to crash. I will further attempt to open the problematic file on another system that is using Microsoft Word 2007 an see what type of code and format it is in.
