I found out something very interesting and important, I think. There is only no picture in case a second display is attached. Even if a video is running at the very same time when the second display is attached, the video player picture (in my case totem and xine) becomes black.
This is probably not the only factor, since I can remember this thing working with both displays turned on. However, it is reproducable for me right now. Whenever I attach the second display the video picture becomes black.
