Thanks for the info about pcmanfm2. Yes the version that is included in the xubuntu repositories still has the same bug, you need to compile a new version from source.
http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/ I managed to fix this problem by getting a copy of the source via git at the project URL. I'm using version 0.9.5 and it does not have the problem.
