Update manager gave me failed update message, then froze (all controls non-responsive). Process manager and all other system tools failed to launch. Rebooted to recover option in grub, used options to repair packages, rebooted (normal). Saw VLC was one of the packages repaired (I think there were 4). Not a fun time, but much better than Winney - recovered in a few minutes - thanks to whoever does the backup and recovery!
