bdkoepke, thank you for your help.  With your pointers, I ended up
compiling my own kernel with a new DSDT.hex (unfortunately current
kernels do not support loading DSDT.aml files from initramfs).  On idle,
with WiFi off and low screen brightness I can also get roughly 10500 mW,
with an estimated 7 hours of battery life.

Of course, in an ideal world we'd find the appropriate progression of
acpi calls so that a custom DSDT would not be necessary.  Even better
would be a true switchable graphics solution, although since Nvidia's
binary driver won't support it, the bottleneck is still getting good 3D
out of nouveau.
