@baptist: The process of adding this functionality to future releases of ubuntu and mainline is ongoing, and has been for some time. The utouch package is based on the upcoming mainline solution.
@tob: The kernel will provide MT data, and Clickpads and Macbook integrated trackpads will be served in user space. For an existing X driver that handles MT data to achieve this, see xf86-input-multitouch. The X synaptics driver will most likely get this functionality too. However, neither of these solutions are satisfactory for gestures, which is why we are building utouch.
