To point out why laptop mode tools is essential for me: I originally had to install the laptop-mode-tools to spin-down my non- flash HD on my laptop. Root file system and /home are installed on separate flash HD that is installed on cd-rom slot. Without laptop mode tools the sda (non flash) kept spinning, making (loud) noise and consuming battery. It was unacceptable.
