Resolved the bug by switching from mplayer 2:1.0~rc4.dfsg1+svn33713-1 to mplayer2 2.0-134-g84d8671-2build1 . Both are available in oneiric repository. Possibly it is a packaging issue - smplayer should require mplayer2 while it requires any mplayer version.
