There is a flickering bug fixed by the mesa 8.0.3 release. Check the bug report and see if you think it may be the same issue:

I've set up a PPA with this release for testing: https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/mesa-803 Install that PPA, reboot, and give a go at reproducing the flickering.
