I did the test with the mainline kernel and it failed too. There's a similar report in the RedHat Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=845745 - boot freezes with Fedora's 3.5 kernel, also reported on the same hardware as here (HP Compaq 6910p Mobility Radeon X2300). Apparently this bug can affect other graphics drivers as well.
