Pidgin 2.1.1 (latest gutsy update)
widen the pidgin buddy window
completely *quit* the pigin application (so there's no icon in the icon
tray)
restart pidgin
you should now only be able to widen the buddy window not reduce its with
(I have buddy icons showing - this *might* (or might not) have a bearing
