Yes, I did install gnome-shell manually via synaptic, I have done this at least half a dozen times with vanilla Ubuntu (inc Unity) 12.04 and 14.04. Previously, I have never encountered a problem. The instruction "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop^" would require me to download 222MB of software and I have declined to do this at the moment. It seems a huge download to possibly fix one package? For the time being, I am going to stay with lightdm but I may try your suggestion next week. Thanks again for your perseverance.
