Hardy with the fglrx driver fixes the screen problems (except for seeing the boot splash screen on the external monitor) without having to touch xorg.conf. It's also fixed the keyboard problem. However, the usb mouse (wired & unwired) stops working after a few sessions, as reported elsewhere.
