Thanks for your report. It seems that without xorg.conf, default sync ranges 
are used:
(II) SAVAGE(0): <default monitor>: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) SAVAGE(0): <default monitor>: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 
Hz
and there is no hint of EDID readout.

I think I have seen other reports of EDID not being read out, but it
works fine on my laptop with savage Twister. And it obviously work when
running Xorg -configure.

Can you please attach the log generated when running Xorg -configure ?
