Me again I did see an old thread relating to Mandrake which suggested adding "options tda9887 pal=i" in /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf. This led to "unrecognised pal" and "unable to tune" errors in dmesg. But the speakers were wonderfully silent (I was getting fed up with the hiss), so the problem's definitely around there.
