This is being tracked here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SPARK-1812, since it will also be needed for cross-building with Scala 2.11. Maybe we can do it before that. Probably too late for 1.1, but you should open an issue for 1.2.
In that JIRA I linked, there's a pull request from a month ago that adds Akka 2.3, so that's worth looking at.
