The differences are basically the sensors and the lens, the FX7 is smaller and has a longer lens, but sports smaller chips, with slightly inferior low-light performance. A feature of the FX7 is the ability to shoot digital stills while shooting video. Here's a summary of the specs that are different between the two: Image Sensor: HDR-FX1: 3 x 1/3" HAD CCD Chips, BETTER LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE HDR-FX7: 3 x 1/4" ClearVid CMOS Chips, BETTER COLOR Lens (both are f/1.6-2.8): HDR-FX1: 32.5 - 390mm (35mm equivalent) 72mm filter diameter SLIGHTLY WIDER WIDE-ANGLE HDR-FX7: 37.4 - 748mm (35mm equivalent) 62mm filter diameter LONGER TELEPHOTO Low Lux: HDR-FX1: 3 Lux SLIGHTLY BETTER LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE HDR-FX7: 4 Lux Size and Weight: HDR-FX1: 6 in. x 14.37 in. x 7.13 in., 4.41 lb. (W x D x H, Weight) HDR-FX7: 5 3/4" x 6 1/4" x 12 3/4" 3.62 lb.(W x D x H, Weight) SMALLER AND LIGHTER The HDR-FX7 looks like an interesting camera. I'll stick with my HVR- A1U until it dies, but when it does, I will replace it with a tapeless camera with true 24P and 30P capability, and hopefully 60P too. I really hope that my HVR-A1U is the LAST videotape camera I ever buy. Cheers, David.
