The Book Share program itself now has its own app. It is free and while
a bit limited, it does read book share books quite well and the recent
addition of a bookmark feature makes it usable in that limited context.

You can always do that with everything else. If I have an apple
device for instance, and it’s not getting updates anymore I can still
use it. This kind of stinks from that aspect. They shouldn’t cut us
off from being able to download anything from Bookshare because we
don’t want to pay. What if we don’t give a good bloody damn about
whatever they think they’re going to implement that we’re going to
pay for. I’m not happy about that. But it’s the best thing out there
so far. God knows the garbage from speech central doesn’t get it
done. It’s too bad.

$59 a year seems perfectly reasonable to me if you want the app to
continue.
You can always dump it for DAISY Easy Reader or Speech Central and
deal with much harder interfaces and keep it free…
