one other thing I forgot, because apache uses the perl module to handle files within the dir that you set up, you can give the files any extension you like or even leave it off, it means you can have pretty url's like www.mywebsite/apps/niceapp they're also not so obvious which might slow the odd hacker down.

When you install mod_perl it adds directives to some of the conf files that you need. There's may be an easier way but maybe this will help.
