not executing scripts in object tags would break lots of things. Ouch.

Possibly, but it depends how you look at the situation. Considering the behaviour of Firefox and IE are the complete opposite, and that IE actually doesn't execute scripts, then it's unlikely to break many things.

This also means that it is unlikely that many authors are depending on it being one way or the other. This actually gives the opportunity to think about the situation and pick the most appropriate one, rather than just sticking with the most widely deployed and depended upon behaviour.
