I just realized that you are on Lucid and not Maverick. In Lucid there is still 1.8. However, the last xserver update added this patch: "[PATCH] xf86: allow for no outputs connected at startup operation". Maybe it is related. if xorg-server (2:1.8.2+git20100705+server-1.8-branch.665aa7ce-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid) works, but xorg-server (2:1.8.2+git20100705+server-1.8-branch.665aa7ce-0ubuntu0sarvatt2~lucid) fails, then this patch is to blame.
