It's had mixed responses around here (Melbourne). I don't mind it but I think 313's very own Slum Village are my current faves when it comes to underground hip-hop; also Common, Jurassic 5, People Under The Stairs, etc, etc.
But it's better than Wyclef's new album which is real disappointing after The Carnival which was so cutting-edge. There are a couple of good tracks, that's it. >I know that discussions about De La Soul are decidedly >non-313 at face value, >So... to get back to the 313 tie in: De La Soul does a >pretty damn cool collabloration with Chaka Khan (what >an unlikely resurrection)! I only consider this a 313 >tie in due to the number of times she's cited as an >early influence to Detroit techno. What does everyone >else think? I read that they originally wanted to work with Mary J Blige but she couldn't do it. Chaka is the bomb and is into everything music-wise. I interviewed her in person a few years ago. Her cousin is a player in the Melbourne R&B scene and toured her here. Chaka is very straight-up and down to earth. And vocally she can still rip it up - despite smoking like a chimney! I'd say she was an influence on disco/house. Does anyone have contact details for Slum Village's management/publicist - would love to interview them or pass them onto a promoter friend who does hip-hop gigs. Cheers Cyclone
