Regardless, Jimi is the man. More of his posters/wall hangings grace more Detroit tech-headz' studios rivalled only by Bruce Lee.

Moreover, when Jimi was the man, there weren't millions of market specific radio stations. In 1968 Detroit there were only two AM radio stations, WCHB and WGPR, which concentrated on R&B and catered mostly to a gospel audience. Back in the day, pop radio was just pop radio. There weren't many black radio stations, just rock FM, talk radio and pop radio, and in spite of being playa-hated by the American pop machine in place at that time...hoards of peeps...black and white...found their way to his music.

Jimi only had one top 10 hit in America and that was 'All Along the Watchtower' but as far as distinguishing himself as a recording artist, he was one of the most innovative and technically proficient. Beyond his first two albums which were packaged for a pop audience, Jimi's sound became increasingly bass-driven and MUY experimental. Jazz fusion evolved out of his Sky Church experimentations with multitudes of jazz musicians both in the studio and on stage.

His influence on the artists in Detroit is direct and profound. Bootsy Collins and George Clinton wer MOST definetly influenced by him, Juan Atkins and Mad Mike cite him as a major influence more than often...and the list goes on from there.

i don't ever recall mojo playing hendrix....nor do i recall black radio
stations as a whole dealing with his work. hendrix may be in there
somewhere...but his influence on detroit is tangential and seems to me
would come mainly through second hand effects (i.e. hendrix influences
prince who influences detroit artists).

i think stevie wonder had a stronger influence....but would think again
that his influence comes more through second hand effects than primary
ones.
