To be honest, it never struck me as being particularly bad at all. I've used it on a lot of mixes and played it out several times, and it always manages to hold its own. As Ken says, I think it's an aesthetic thing - all the Basic Channel records were mastered onto cassette (IIRC) and that sort of fuzziness to the mastering is an essential component of their whole sound.
