That is no defect but the way the command newline is implemented now. Terms must
be balanced on each line, which means that each open bracket must be closed on
the same line and each operator must have all its operands on the same line.
The enhancement for a new behaviour of the command newline is issue 12311.
To display brackets around a couple of lines, you should use the 'stack'
command:
left( stack { first line # second line # third line} right)
