In such extreme cases, limiting the IDAT has clear benefits. My original concern was that for users (like myself) who take time to optimize their images, that any imported pngs would be automatically converted on saving the OOo document (thus undoing any optimization). But its seems I may have misunderstood the issue, which states: 'png export'. (I assume this only effects exporting a drawing / presentation to png format).
