My company produces a product called "WinLims". In accordance with our style
guide the text "Win" should be rendered in one font and colour, and "Lims" in a
different font and colour. When writing the instruction manuals it is convenient
to ignore the style guide, and apply the formatting to every instance of the
text using Find & Replace once the manual is completed.

Character styles have been created for the two parts of the text. We would like
to "Find All" to select every occurrance of "WinLims", then "Find All" with
"Current Selection Only" checked to highlight all the relevant instances of
"Win". We would then like to apply the character style, or alternatively set the
font and colour using the Formatting toolbar. The process is then repeated for
"Lims".

If the word "WinLims" appears in the Table of Contents or the Index then we are
unable to change the formatting of all of the other occurrances because these
indexes are protected. Manually deselecting the entries doesn't re-enable the
formatting tools.

Un-protecting the indexes allows us to make the changes but requires us to
manually un-protect each of them first, then make our changes, then re-apply
protection, however this quickly gets annoying as there are several indexes in
this document. If you forget to un-protect one of the indexes before performing
the search operations then the act of accessing the Edit Index/Table dialogue to
do so results in all of the selected text being de-selected and the search has
to be repeated.
