Personally I thing it should have been left, in the say way MySQL and MS Access is available. They are just wrappers for JDBC or ODBC or ADO settings are they not. HSQL is the de facto native format for Base, and it can be used in server mode - exporting a database from embedded to server or file based is very easy. The opportunity was there to make it even easier for inexperienced users by automatically setting certain options int the new database wizard.
