I have it working, by using a manual entry. Here is what happened:

In OOo 2.4 Writer document, I type an accented word such as "entree." I select
the word, then clicked on tools>autocorrect. The selected word (or words) is
automatically placed in the replacement area. I click on the entry area, type
"entree" [no accent], and the correctly accented word is already in the
replacement area. Click on "new" and "OK" and everything works. Except for "deja
vu," which always disappeared from the alphabetical list (I mean the replace
value disappeared, not the "deja" entry part).

You said it worked fine for you. So it finally dawned on me to enter everything
manually. Went to autocorrect. Enter "deja". Go to the replacement area and used
Ctrl-Shift-S to enter special characters, the accented e and the accented a.
Have an accented "deja vu" in the replacement area.

Closed autocorrect. Tried it out and it works (as it did before). Opened up
autocorrect and the entry for "deja vu" is still there. Surprised me, but there
it is. Works fine.

Frankly I'd forget about this unless someone else ever has a similar problem.
Thank you very much for your help.
