The only feature that must be disabled in a read-only file is "Save". It's simpler to use, simpler to understand and simpler to implement (avoiding several bugs). I often open a read-only file, make some changes (or just some calculations in the spreadsheet) and, after that, I decide if I want to save a copy of it or not.
